Muscle strength in young children perinatally infected with HIV who were initiated on antiretroviral therapy early

چکیده

Background. As children with perinatally acquired HIV (PHIV) are living longer, long-term physical sequelae of the disease becoming more pertinent. Muscle strength is known to be adversely affected in adults infected but little about muscle PHIV. Objectives. To determine compared an uninfected control group. Associations between clinical and anthropometric variables were investigated. Methods. In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 175 who 171 HIV-uninfected had their assessed by hand-held dynamometry ‘make test’. Clinical data extracted from children’s clinic files. Height weight using a stadiometer digital scale, respectively. Children ages 5 11 years age at assessment. The all been initiated on antiretroviral treatment (ART) young (mean (standard deviation (SD)) 8.7 (6.7) months) was well controlled. Results. Despite presenting significantly lower height, body mass index (BMI) for z-scores, there no statistical difference two groups. BMI Tanner staging associated both Conclusions. ART early whose controlled able attain near-normal strength. Longitudinal follow-up these as they go through puberty warranted.

Language impairment in children perinatally infected with HIV compared to children who were HIV-exposed and uninfected.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the risk for language impairment (LI) in children perinatally infected or exposed to HIV. METHODS We evaluated the prevalence of LI in 7- to 16-year-old children with perinatal HIV infection (HIV+) compared with HIV-exposed and uninfected children, using a comprehensive standardized language test (Clinical Evaluation of Language Functioning-Fourth Edition [CELF-4]). L...

Possible mitochondrial dysfunction and its association with antiretroviral therapy use in children perinatally infected with HIV.

BACKGROUND Mitochondrial dysfunction has been associated with both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and exposure to antiretroviral therapy. Mitochondrial dysfunction has not been widely studied in HIV-infected children. We estimated the incidence of clinically defined mitochondrial dysfunction among children with perinatal HIV infection. METHODS Children with perinatal HIV infecti...

Emergence of HIV-1 drug resistance in antiretroviral therapy experienced perinatally infected children in South India

Results Among those who had been on ART for a median period of 24 months 51 children (83.6%) achieved virological suppression. There were 10 children with virological failure, and only two amongst these manifested immunological failure. Nine children (90%) had reverse transcriptase-related DRMs, and none had protease inhibitor-related DRMs. The most frequent NRTI mutation was M184V (n=9) follow...

Establishment and Replenishment of the Viral Reservoir in Perinatally HIV-1-infected Children Initiating Very Early Antiretroviral Therapy

BACKGROUND Combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) generally suppresses the replication of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) but does not cure the infection, because proviruses persist in stable latent reservoirs. It has been proposed that low-level proviral reservoirs might predict longer virologic control after discontinuation of treatment. Our objective was to evaluate the im...

A randomized controlled safety/efficacy trial of therapeutic vaccination in HIV-infected individuals who initiated antiretroviral therapy early in infection.

Despite substantial clinical benefits, complete eradication of HIV has not been possible using antiretroviral therapy (ART) alone. Strategies that can either eliminate persistent viral reservoirs or boost host immunity to prevent rebound of virus from these reservoirs after discontinuation of ART are needed; one possibility is therapeutic vaccination. We report the results of a randomized, plac...
